The Board of Directors was formed to run the day-to-day operations of the Association. In September 2010 the organization registered the group as a not-for-profit entity in the State of Florida. The reason being that most of the Executive Officers were residing in that State and doing so would expedite the formal legalization of the Association.
Our next step was to create the operational manual which we call the By Laws. Four alums were identified for the challenge and spent many hours over several months across several States in completing the By Laws Draft. The group, including Lead Director Clover Hughie-Scott, was comprised of Morain Miller(Connecticut), Dr. Maxine Barker(South Carolina) and B. Roy Davidson (California). The Association owes a great deal of gratitude to these past students for their dedication, commitment and hard work.
A meeting was convened by the board near Fort Lauderdale, Florida to review The Draft. This took all day on a memorable Saturday with Liz Smith(Cayman Island), joining the team in Florida. We started at the conference room at a bank and after the bank was closed the group moved to a restaurant location. We really expended a lot of time and efforts; we agreed to most of the rules and utilized the democratic instrument (one-man-one-vote) in deciding other points of interests. Just about 90% of the document was completed and Liz was tasked to put the document is a simple, readable format before it was disseminated for public consumption. We are all elated with the final product. We encourage everyone to read these documents and provide constructive feedback, whether it being comments or improvements.
Our final step was to launch the organization on campus in Mandeville with the approval of past students being the primary members. This event was very well attended with a lot of buzz and curiosity. Once the launch was achieved we then sought the USA Tax Deferment status under the Tax rule of 501(c)(3) designation. We employed the services of expertise and successfully received the approval from the USA Federal Government.
Subsequently, we can now advise donors that their contributions are tax deductible to the full extent as the law permits. Alums and Friends wishing to donate financially to scholarships, dues, etc. can go to the Give to CTCAAi page. Payments go directly to the Association's Paypal account which is legally tied to our bank account, currently TD Bank. Alums who make payments on our site MUST inform the Association treasury department in order for you to receive the appropriate receipt for your tax files.
